Summer flies by with surprising speed. Hard to believe it’s the end of August. It’s been an eventful summer for me.

Three Degrees One of my watercolor originals, “Three Degrees” has been selected for inclusion in the Pennsylvania Watercolor Society’s 33rd International Juried Art Exhibit, Nov. 4-Feb. 3, 2013, at The State Museum of Pennsylvania, 300 North Street, Harrisburg. I am now a Signature Member of the Pennsylvania Watercolor Society, a distinction I share with many outstanding artists around the world. You can follow the entire process as “Three Degrees” evolved on my blog page.

Currently, nineteen of my paintings are in the “Watercolors at the WomanCare Center” exhibition. The show opens Friday, August 24, 2012 at the WomanCare Center of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC)Horizon, 975 North Hermitage Road, Hermitage, PA. I’m one of seven Pennsylvania watercolor artists included in the exhibition which will continue until September 31. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the watercolor paintings will benefit UPMC Horizon’s Abused Women-Domestic Violence Program.

I recently finished the second of three commissioned paintings. All three are sited in northwestern Pennsylvania, the beautiful area that I grew up in. I enjoy commission work because it’s satisfying to paint a scene that has special meaning for the client. The challenge is to capture the feeling and significance the scene represents to the individual or family who requested the work. So before beginning the primary sketch, I spend time on site with them, listening to their comments and anecdotes about why this particular place is memorable. When the finished work elicits expressions of gratitude and joy from the new owner, I know the painting is a success. And that’s a great feeling.

May you experience the ordinary things of life in extraordinary ways.
